How do I define history?
Well it’s just one fucking thing after another, isn’t it?

这部片子咣铛铛的敲击了我的英语听力自信心,真tmd的难懂啊。一方面这次的 The History Boys 说的是英英,另一方面它是改编于舞台戏剧,台词都很讲究,太有文化了,很多词我根本就没听说过。戏剧版的 The History Boys 在2004年英国公演后获得巨大成功,2006开始在百老汇上演后更是风光无限,得奖无数,包揽了2006年Tony奖 Best Play, Best Director 等6项大奖,而这次电影用的全部是原班人马。虽然看电影的整个过程中我都在半懂半不懂的边缘徘徊,但是我还是挺享受这部片子的。当然我身边的其他观众似乎都听的懂,尤其中间一段对白都用法语,影院里一大帮家伙都懂法语,哈哈的笑,咳咳,真tmd刺激人。故事讲80年代,几个A-Level的历史学生在准备Oxbridge[1]的入学考试,指导他们的两个老师Hector和Irwin,一老一少,风格相悖。Hector完全不为考试而教,不设限制,诗歌戏剧无所不包,为学知识为学;而Irwin则更在乎考试,强调与众不同出类拔萃。这两种风格似乎一直是教育界的两个对立面,但片子的重点不只在讨论这两种风格的优劣,还包括成长,以及“历史”这个大话题,而且更加controversial的是这片子还涉及到了Pederasty[2]。有争议的自然引发的话题最多,看完之后我不知道该怎么看待pederasty这件事,尤其片子里的boys本着什么样的心态来看这件事也并不见得那么明了,也许他们确实只是觉得那一面的Hector是一个joke,但是,也许还是会“scarred for life”。当然既然是 Best Play 的本子,台词肯定是聪明的,可惜听不懂让我看的时候少了不少乐趣,不过起码之后找来一些台词看看,还是很有意思。

Dakin: I’m just kicking the tyres on this one but, further to the drink, what I was really wondering was whether there were any circumstances in which there was any chance of your sucking me off. [pause] Or something similar. [pause] Actually, that would please Hector.
Tom Irwin: What?
Dakin: “Your sucking me off.” It’s a gerund[3]. He likes gerunds. And your being scared shitless, that’s another gerund.
