\nI have seen the most decrepit laboratories producing
\nthe best science, while very nice laboratories are
\nvery often stagnant;<\/p>\n
c) do not waste time on technological issues unless
\nnecessary: we are not doing technology, we want to
\nunderstand some science, so we use vacuum techniques,
\nelectronics, etc. as tools, exactly like a theoretical
\nphysicist uses mathematics for his\/her calculations\/ideas;<\/p>\n
d) ask advice to more senior students when you feel that
\nthey may help. Also, ask advice to people in the machine
\nshop, or the electronic shop. Of course they have their
\nown projects but if they can spend few minutes they will
\nnever shut the door. This does not mean that they have to
\ndo your job of course;<\/p>\n
e) spend more time in the lab: there is always something
\nnew to learn, even just what is available and what is
\nmissing. Also, spend some time browsing catalogues and
\nmanuals to see what is available on the market;<\/p>\n
f) try always to estimate effects you are looking for
\nwith simple calculations. You may save a lot of time in
\ndoing this, and develop a physical sense for what is
\nrelevant, and what is not relevant.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
