今天在English The Real Deal看到了Murphy’s Law。这条定律是在1949年从美国空军的Capt. Edward A. Murphy口中诞生的,到现在已经有了无数变型和引伸,但中心思想就是一句话:If anything can go wrong, it will。列几条比较基本的,用最近常见到的一个词来形容,这些定律非常死相-_-。

MURPHY’S LAWS
  • Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.
  • If anything simply cannot go wrong, it will anyway.
  • If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong.
  • If you perceive that there are four possible ways in which a procedure can go wrong, and circumvent these, then a fifth way, unprepared for, will promptly develop.
  • Left to themselves, things tend to go from bad to worse.
  • If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.
  • Nature always sides with the hidden flaw.
  • Mother nature is a bitch.
  • It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious.
  • Everything takes longer than you think.
  • Whenever you set out to do something, something else must be done first.
  • Every solution breeds new problems.

还有一张poster,上面列的几条是相对更生活化的,当然也同样死相,比如The chance of a slice of bread falling butter side down is directly proportional to the cost of the carpet(面包掉落有黄油的一面着地的概率正比于地毯的价格)。上面还强调Murphy was an optimist。如果我们已经知道everything will go wrong,那么也就没什么好畏惧的了。所以让我们共同乐观对待这个美好的世界吧,禀承The Murphy Philosophy: Smile . . . tomorrow will be worse. lol
