较少人走的路
树林中有两条路
而我选了那条较少人走的路
这就造成了所有人的差异
开车到学校的路上,听着姐姐传来的袁泉的新专辑。大大眼睛修长美腿的袁泉确实很美,可惜她的戏没看过多少,只在北大时看过她有出演的话剧《狂飚》,挺喜欢那部话剧。对她的歌声,相比来说还是更喜欢她的独白,她说话时的声音更好听,当年听小美的专辑就对袁泉在里面念的”我的心是一片海洋,可以温柔,却有力量“印象深刻。这次听她的歌,有一首很短的独白,她在念一首诗,听她在念”而我选了那条较少人走的路“,突然反应过来,前段时间刚在我参加的 conversation group 里讨论过原版的那首英文诗。

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
老师说这首诗在美国很著名,尤其最后一句,常被人用在毕业典礼之类的场合。多数人都喜欢简单的把它就解读为不走寻常路,但我们当时讨论就注意到,其实不见得如此。大概第一感觉他是选择了似乎更少人走的路,但是“Though as for that, the passing there / Had worn them really about the same / And both that morning equally lay / In leaves no step had trodden black.”其实两条路并没有本质差别,并没有哪条真的是较少人走的路。我当时讨论时说,也许诗人的意思是,面对选择时,也许很多人都会选择不那么烂俗似乎做的人少的那一个,但做下来才发现,其实所谓的“特殊”并不是那么回事,一样有很多人做,一样很普通。似乎不少人也同意这种解读,很多时候面对岔路口,我们的选择其实在一定程度上是随机的,但是日后回忆起来,虽然难免还是会”with a sigh“,但是为了不让自己老是念着那条”road not taken“,再讲述时只会说,我选择这条路是因为较少人走,所以我有开创性啊,这一切就造成了差异。多少有点自欺欺人。不过诗就是这种东西,所谓的好诗常常需要能有不同的解读,也许也不见得有什么对错。
回到袁泉,不知道她念这三句断来的诗时,想的是哪种解读?
